What is WordPress? Why is it important?
If you have arrived at this page by querying Google with “What is WordPress?” you have obviously heard of it and want to find out a bit more about it. Here at WPWSS we are evangelists of WordPress Security but often overlook the fact that whilst millions of people worldwide are using WordPress to get their website up and running on the web, there are also many who have heard of it but don’t really know what its about.
So we thought we had better explain it.
What is WordPress?
Let’s start with the Wikipedia definition of WordPress.
” WordPress is a free and open-source content management system (CMS) based on PHP and MySQL. Features include a plugin architecture and a template system. WordPress was used by more than 23.3% of the top 10 million websites as of January 2015. WordPress is the most popular blogging system in use on the Web, at more than 60 million websites.”
Wow pretty impressive.
So why has WordPress been so successfull?
As you have seen above WordPress is created using a programming language called PHP that acceses a database structure called MySQL. Well these technical languages are the domain of the programmer and not for the everyday individual.
When WordPress started it was designed to be free and open source for Bloggers who wanted to write about their particular interests and certainly didnt know anything about programming in the PHP language, so the creators devised what is now known as a Content Management System that meant you did not need to know anything about programming and coding you just had to write your blog or webpage content just like you were using Microsoft Word.
You could add images and just drag and drop these images around the page.
Bingo just what everyone needed, a way to build your own website without the need to learn code!
What are the benefits of WordPress?
So we have seen that its easy to add content to your website using WordPress but why is it so great?
Here’s a list of key benefits:
- Easy to use
Add, edit and delete blogs pages and images without the need to know coding.
- Edit from any device, anywhere, anytime
WordPress is browser based so any device that has a browser and an internet connection means you can edit it anytime.
- Google loves WordPress
In fact all search engines love WordPress. The code ‘behind’ WordPress is very Search Engine friendly allowing Search Engines like Google to index your pages into their database.
You now have control over yur website and no longer need to rely on your web developer to add a line of text on a page. You will however need him/her to add functionaility if you require it.
- Web Design and Theme templates
So you are not a designer, no problem websites such as ThemeForest provide hundereds of themes at reasonable prices that you can just install and go.
- Extra functionaility using Plugins
WordPress has a huge community of developers that provide free and paid plugins that extend the functionaility of WordPress e.g a Twitter plugin that streams your tweets onto a page on your website, to name just one of millions avaialable.
There are many more but these can be considered the key benfits of WordPress
How do you create your own WordPress website?
If you are reading this article then we suspect that your are thinking about building a website for yourself or your business. So here is how you go about it.
All websites need to be stored on a computer that is connected to the internet. There are 2 methods of housing or ‘hosting’ your WordPress website.
The first is:
Here you can signup and get a WordPress installation easily and quickly without any knowledge and get started straight away.
Here you can rent a server and install the WordPress Software and have your own server, there are many cheap hosting solutions out there such as WPEngine a dedicated WordPress hosting provider. For this you will most likely need a friendly devloper to get everything setup, it shouldnt take them more than an hour of work to setup.
Tip: Make sure you have a dedicated IP Address
Well thats pretty much it, WordPress is simple and easy to setup, use and provide your presence on the web without using a dedicated website developer.
We are a WordPress Security provider so it would be amiss not mention that because WordPress is so popular it does unfortunately attract hackers that will try to ruin your website. We provide protection from this by managing your website against security attacks for as little as £99 per year.
